Open Day on May 14: Bandon Allotments Still Growing

Bandon Allotments, a community organised project which began early last year, has been growing from strength to strength ever since. The Allotments have seen more than thirty families taking up plots during the first year and are looking forward to welcoming lots of new members this growing season.

There are many new and exciting developments to report at the Allotments this year also. Thanks to a generous grant from West Cork Development Partnership the allotment members can look forward to having poly-tunnels, tool-sheds and many other facilities at the allotment site in the near future.

We are celebrating our achievements with an Open Day on Saturday May 14th from 2pm and invite everyone to come along and help us celebrate in style. If you’re interested in getting an allotment plot this is an ideal opportunity to have a look around and meet other members and if you’re just looking for a bit of fun and entertainment for the kids on a Saturday afternoon you’re more than welcome too.

There will be Composting Demonstrations on the day, kindly sponsored by Cork County Council Composting Awareness. There will also be plenty of music, food, games and kids entertainment to keep the whole family happy.

Suggested layout for new developments

Hi everyone

See what you think of the layout in this picture. At the last meeting we agreed to seek funding for polytunnels, a lock up and a place to sit down out of the rain. The tunnels in the drawing are only 12m long and so would fit only 24x2m indoor plots – longer tunnels would be a bit more cramped but could fit. The lock up is 8m long in the drawing. I think it would be a good idea to keep out of sight from the road. We can talk about it at the meeting on Tuesday March 8.

Allotments now available

Bandon allotments are up and running! Thanks and congratulations to the small group of dedicated people that have helped to bring this about and to Cork County Council for making the land available. The allotment garden is located in Cloughmacsimon – a short distance off the bypass, right behind Coláiste Na Toirbhirte. It’s set on a gentle south facing slope,  with well drained light soil that should produce some superb veggies. There’s compost available on site and work will shortly begin on creating a new entrance, car park, perimeter fencing and water supply. Plots are available in 2 sizes 5x7m for €80pa or 5x10m for €100pa. There are plenty of plots available so call 023 8852922 or 087 9567452 or email bandontransition@gmail.com for more information. Sign up for email updates and we’ll let you know about upcoming events, like our open day in mid-May.
